PostSubject: Merry Christmas everyone!   Sun Dec 18, 2011 8:49 am

My wife asked me to jog down something short that she could put in our cards this year. Just thought I'd share it here and wish you all a great Christmas and all the best for the coming year!

Christmas 2011
As we gather with friends and family
In this land of the “Politically Correct”
We send greetings that say “Happy Holidays”
It’s caused me to think, “What the heck”?!

Some choose to celebrate Winter Solstice
Or Ramadan, or Kwanza, or such
They can, ‘cause we live in a Country
Where Freedom is cherished so much

Our wish is for a bright MERRY CHRISTMAS
May it be filled with Thanksgiving, Merriment and Mirth
Just keep in mind the true meaning of “CHRISTMAS”
Is the celebration of the Christ Child’s birth!

A COWBOY'S CHRISTMAS PRAYER

The worn and wrinkled cowboy
slowly shaved and combed his hair.
He picked the finest clothes he had
... and then he dressed with care.
He stomped into his new bought boots
and shrugged into his coat.
The others would have questioned him,
but his thoughts seemed quite remote.

He stepped out of the bunkhouse,
and pulled his hat down tight,
Then climbed aboard his private horse
and rode into the night.
The single footin' gelding
ate the miles without a pause
And seemed to know the rider
had a most important cause.

Twenty miles on through the night,
with the rider deep in thought,
The stars came out to guide his way
to the goal the ride had bought.
His horse stopped on a gentle rise,
tho' the rider pulled no rein,
And the cowboy raised his head to stare
'Cross the quiet and lonely plain

He crawled down off the weary horse,
loosed the cinch so it could blow,
Then walked a yard or two away
and knelt down in the snow.
He crushed his hat against his chest,
raised his face up to the sky,
And then he started talking
like a friend was standing by.

"Lord, you see I rode a piece tonight
'Cause I knowed that you'd be here.
Course you wuz at the bunkhouse too,
but on this hill ya' seems near.
As I look acrost this prairie
and see the things you've made,
Why, comparin' things us men has done
really puts 'em in the shade."

"I thank you for the love you show
in everything you do,
And I'm proud to be a top-hand
with a loyal happy crew.
I've still got all my fingers,
my legs are bowed, but tough,
Rheumatiz' ain't touched my bones,
and my mind is sharp enough."

"Your spirit gives me comfort,
and I know that when I die,
You'll let me rest forever
at that bunkhouse in the sky.
Forgive me when I wander off,
like a wild jug-headed hoss,
And I pray You'll not give up on me
'fore I learn that you're the boss."

"I've rode out here to tell you
I'm thankful for a Savior's birth,
And to send you MERRY CHRISTMAS
from your folks down here on earth."
Then he mounted up and rode away
with a casual good-bye nod.
A cowboy with his heart at peace
in the palm of the hand of God.

it`s surely been a good year folks, because it went by so quickly...may the coming year bring everyone just enough...It`s going to be exciting because more will begin to move past talk to beginning to do... thanks to all of you for making this gathering place so much fun...keep your minds and fingers nimble ; and let`s hope to put some new faces on fingers come early August at another Gathering under the Big Sky...
mk, hanging stockings in hopes Santa leaves tickets for Red Lodge; and gas money for Miles City, Bainville, Two Dot, Kimball, Red Oak, Leon and wherever else my wife`s heart or a calf`s bawl leads...Peace and Joy to you all

Merry Christmas to all those that visit us, and those that don't.

Forgive me of my failures, as Jesus has.

There have been many blessings this year - including getting the chance to follow the dialogue here and learn...
Thanks for the different perspectives!

Tom, That's an awful nice looking set of boys you've got there! Seeing them and reading OT's post reminded me of another poem that is a favorite of mine. Everyone knows Charlie Russell was a great artist. I think he was a pretty good wordsmith also.

Christmas at the Line Camp

Last night I drifted back in dreams
To childhood’s stamping ground
I’m in my little bed, it seems,
The old folks whispering ‘round.
My sox is hung; Maw’s tucked me in;
It’s Christmas eve you see.
I’ve said my prayers, blessed all my kin,
I’m good as good kin be.

But suddenly I’m wakened wide,
From out this youthful dream.
By jingling bells that’s just outside
Hung on some restless team.
Reminded by rheumatic shin,
And lumbagoed back that’s sore,
Whiskered face, hair that’s thin,
I ain’t no kid no more.

And getting my boots I open the door,
And I’m sure surprised to see,
An old time freighter I knowed before,
But Its years since he called on me.
He’s an undersized skinner,
Good natured and stout,
With a team like himself,
All Small.
It’s the same old cuss
Maw tells me about,
Just old Santy Claus, reindeers and all.

He’s aholding his ribbons like an old timer would
When he nods his head to me,
“I wish you’d put me right if you could,
I’m way off the trail,” says he,
“I follow the trail of the stork – it’s strange,
Me missing his track”, says he,
“But I’m guessing that bird
Never touched this range,
For there’s no sign of youngsters I see.

You bachelors have a joyful way
When and wherever you’re found
Forth of July, or Paddy’s day
A-passing the drinks around.
But to get the joy that Christmas brings,
You must be acquainted with three,
A homes but a camp without these things,
A wife, the stork, and me.”

And then my bunk pal gives me a shake,
And growls in a cranky way,
“You’ve got all the bedding,
I’m cold as a snake.
I wonder what day is today.
Charles M. Russell

Man, talk about peas in a pod. Or peas out of the pod, or little floating heads in sea of black. I wonder what sort of message Grandma was trying to send by putting the boys in black and the girl in white?

Happy Boxing Day, Hilly, you Canadian Consumer.

The boss lady and I quarreled for an hour last night over which ones were yours. Please set the record straight.

Tom, has Craig ever told you about the time he crashed a plane in the Yukon and lived off of dog meat and underwear bands. If he hasn't he should. As a matter of fact he should tell it on here to all of us. Maybe Waffle Cone will even illustrate the sidebar for it.

Bootheel, never worried we'll run out of things to talk about.
