Ode to Fescue
Gifted cow from Wyoming,
She lost her tail,
She lost her hair,
She gave her heart,
To raise a good calf,
Now the rules say,
We must part...

I know her name{ester} and number,
I wish I didn`t,
She had no price,
So now at great cost,
She becomes a dinner,
And the bull calf
Another lineage lost.

Looks like she lost her tail too - maybe to photoshop rather than fescue?

We've been weaning at our favorite facility for 30 years...shade, water, grass, no shots, 5 strand barb with one hot wire ,
in the pastures the calves were born in , and grazed all summer...
We score for more traits at weaning than anyone in the industry Smile if a calf has performed well , everything about him
must be good, eh ? Three stars on every trait for those, I saw 20 % 2 stars, mostly because their mothers calved 40
days later, and about 5 % one stars...dam`s need culling, age usually...if a breeder needs .., wait, if a producer needs
more than 3 stars to describe his calf crop, he is, in fact a multiplier and a sorter, NOT A BREEDER.
Since the only bulls we save are three stars, and another sort is made of any falling behind at yearling, we won't be
needing any computer sorting programs, not even a cowboy, or con man auction since all the bulls will be the same
price...same duties, same potential =one price in my math ..if getting your pick of the bulls for $2200 at next spring's
sale bothers you, you can tip after everyone has gone home, we don't want others to feel obligated Wink
... And since we're not in the AI, cow trading , cattle or feed co-op business, using only home raised bulls, expect
greater promise of what you see, will be what YOU get..
I can't say the world is beating a path to our door, I can guarantee you our genetics alone won't make you rich ,
but you can make a living and have time for fun while doing it...I know, because we have, and still do  Very Happy

from gar
The selection pressure to improve maternal traits is and always has been equally as important as selection pressure to improve end product merit. For more than 37 years, the focus has not changed. GAR customers expect a vigorous, live calf with the genetic capacity for explosive growth, a value-added carcass and sisters that can be retained to continue to improve the cow herd. Some debate that it can't be done. It can and it is

with enough money and feed, you can change anything...

Mike,
My favorite uncle commented this week while sitting around the animals at the local fair that he wished I had stayed in the paper business. Simple reply was if I had stayed in it I would not be having as much fun and no one ever bought a trailer load of replacement heifers at a time when I was in the paper business. I am just glad another year has gone by at the fair and I was never forced to show papers on my Grand Champion bull or cow calf pair again. I don't think it would have gone over well saying I had non papered multiple sires in the pasture. Shocked

Mike,
Best be careful posting pictures of cattle on display at local registered cattle shows with stacked generations of your breeding. Your cattle are meant for the profit of the commercial cattleman but in truth a bit of eye appeal does not hurt sales does it. It does not matter to me who is daddy is as long as not my neighbors bull. I know he momma's sire was thought enough by you to offer semen on dispite no one wanting him as a yearling so you named him Unwanted. Next sire was the high selling bull at a long ago sale of yours named Fred and next sire after that was a homegrown sire of mine . Nothing special anyplace there but hopefully nothing really bad either.

Mark,
I hope when you were presented that Grand Champion Bull Cup, that you had the presidential presence of mind to
dedicate it to all the hurricane victims in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico ...on second thought, I know you have more
character and less ego than that...

Snared a pic today of another two year old, 4 days after weaning ...so characteristic of the Encores, that I feel certain
she is sired by a linebred grandson of the old bull...and what if she isn't?
I'm producing characteristics , not pedigrees or registration papers...like to like from within the herd is building consistency
AND prepotency of those functional maternal traits I cherish...Larry , like Lasater, said the time comes in a breeding program
built around consistency when the herd name and a number suffices...I`m there, whether the public "buys" that or not...
From a little pamphlet called The Shoshone Direction, Larry wrote long ago ...
quote "Historically, very few breeders have selected EXCLUSIVELY just for a beef cow. Although her basic job never changes,
for a variety of reasons, her role Is often compromised by other selection criteria.
For the past 14 years, it has been our objective to produce, over a period of years, one or more strains of work and wear
beef cows...that would REPRODUCE TRUE to a specific standard of quality, generation after generation, UNLIKELY TO BE OUTDATED " end of quote
and today, neither the cow type or the breeding methods are outdated, and the maternal breeders are still few, most disciples to some
degree of Larry Leonhardt, most using the genetics as well, and a couple even creating "prepotent strains that reproduce true"...
it is unlikely that to them will be the glory, just the quiet satisfaction of having done so...may it be ENOUGH

there can be no improvement in a line that does not possess the genes needed to improve a particular trait...

go find yourself a complimentary line to cure some ills !!!!!!!!!!

A book of True Stories in this bull calf...that no one wants to hear on Facebook Smile
I was pleased to see this unregistered bull calf priced highest in the Oliver Angus pre-sale minimums ...
though I put little stock in pedigree breeding , the pedigree here does retrace and cause me to reflect
on more personal and public stories than any I believe I have ever encountered...yes, the older, the more
stories, but the shorter the memory...Smile
I despise mainstream footnotes based on $100,000 puppies for $50,000 kittens...Maybe if I wrote a footnote/story,
not based on hearsay, or price {though there be a couple of references} but of personal experience, someone might
enjoy re-tracing the back roads of strain development..., this one would be so long, it will have to be in installments Smile
....lest I forget, I would sure hope some young enterprising, , maternal aficionado buys this calf, so the background
story I hope to write will be continued long after me...I would say I can about guarantee a happy ending...except...as
you know, with genes, there are no endings, just constant quest for improvement...
....And remembering, coming up the grade onto the East Bench, 1 am, me half-asleep, Larry driving, intense thinking
mood, cab full of smoke, saying, "Mike , you don`t get much done breeding cattle in a lifetime.."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQHxqmwcgpQ&index=20&list=PLs0n5fPOxH3Wl_b-tppSjjfH9mKotIoL3

ps...I notice the testicles are small...a constant threat when closer breeding imo...or, maybe just in the lineages...

Testicles must be plenty big if he was born 1/2017 and they plan to use him spring of 2017 Shocked just have to love those misprints in sale books.
What is the purpose of his dam in that program?

Larry gave Ed pick of the two yr old heifers. ..and when he mistakenly picked one not registered, larry wouldn't let him exchange her...funny story...
The calf doesn't interest me to use...too high priced to boot Smile

Pay it Forward...continuation
So Larry and a friend comes to Ky for a visit, and I'm anxious for him to see the Favour son from 1702
as she became known......18 months old .really small , correct, fleshy. ..and I had HEARD {from LL primarily}
but never seen, that Favour daughters were very nice , udders, feminine etc. ..imagine my disappointment
when laughter was the over riding comment...and "HE'S TOO LITTLE "...
a commercial producer needed a bull to breed heifers the next spring, so I sold him as a two year old ,
never to be heard from again...I had bred a handful of cows to him, the couple of resulting daughters
made very nice , 900 -1000 lb cows, so yes, he was too little. .....but when the grass fed and little fat bull
philosophy caught fire, I often have thought how popular he would be, and what a good specimen to have
had FOR SALE Smile..a rare, nostalgic pedigree, goodness based on hearsay rather than current reality, and
from a historic herd ...magic marketing malarkey Smile
....Since then I figure I've used and produced many no-name bulls bigger AND better, like the sire of the
cow below ...
Picture taken today in the rain, humming a Petty favorite , No, I won`t back down...or go back, except
in memory, to appreciate those who have Paid it Forward...!

With a couple of aging dark clouds threatening on the horizon , but more so for time AND money, we offer 15-20 of these 45 bred
heifers for sale...ultrasound preg check to calve Mar 1 -30, bred naturally to multiples of our bulls ( of course)...Price is $1750/hd,
a $200 parent stock premium over our standard commercial bred heifer formula (feeder futures , currently $1.54 × 1000)...
weighing 900 plus...there should be some maternal herd sires in the offspring, there will be for sure if they stay here, and we
sell some old cows instead...the heifers are the result of our maternal genetic selection, not the state heifer sale standards of
fat, frame, and a pelvic measurement with rounds of vaccines . ..call or message for more details...will sell 5 minimum group. ..
A note from a KY customer...
"Wanted to let you know that I have a great set of cows and calves from the heifers I bought from you last year. I also have
several bulls that I'm using out of the Fenley son that I got from you that I am using. Once I'm through with them, maybe
I can get another bull. They are just too good. Smile"Ryan
NO, Planned Obsolescence is not part of our breeding program...
