drying up a little around here...in the interim before a pic or two...look at the bargain our bulls are...

from tb...A very exciting weekend of Angus sales: The Byergo Sale at Savannah, Missouri, grossed $670,000 with 83 Angus bulls averaging $5,770 – a Missouri record, Jon Janssen at Earlham, Iowa, had the best first time breeders sale every held in the State of Iowa taking in $.5 million with the bulls averaging $8,000, the Riley Brothers Sale at Darlington, Wisconsin, set a new Wisconsin record with the bulls averaging over $10,000 on over 40 head, Nathan Palm at Estelline, South Dakota, had another landmark event – out of control demand for females.

out of control demand? I`d say very Very Happy

Today at facebook...for a few responses

I often read marketeering {correct spelling} statements alluding to the goodness of "the Angus cow" as seeing the Angus "breed" through all the selection directions and resulting type changes I`ve seen in my lifetime; as if the Angus cow is some kind of resilient , prepotent , sex-linked genetic staple immune to change...BS!
The consistently good, functional Angus cows are the result of RESILIENT BREEDERS who stay on a steady, straight ahead, maternally emphasized course, no matter the wind direction...

my gosh...almost 30 years ago the "UK extension genetic expert" convinced the powers that be at UK to use this bull...It inspired me to run from the floor for a beef cattle association office to oppose such nonsense as a sale order based on frame score {about like Deckers show me genome bs}...and yes, I won to the dismay and disgust of the beef cattle leadership; and I changed things; but alas, it soon reverted back...promoting and applying common cow sense requires a constant vigil; better yet, a dictatorship...got less fight in me now, but pretty damn nice to now be able to say "I told you so"...

I`m anxious to get old Shocker picture up on facebook tomorrow...for the first time ever , he might live up to his name...and be good for some of the bureaucrats that fought me to be reminded of the stupidity they were fighting for...

I'm not missing out, just working on sheep and dirt groups right now. I was afraid to link up with Mike on FB. He might think I was a stalker or a groupie! He's over there fishing for newbies and the unthinking. Maybe he can catch some of the AAA members in their first 6 years prior to dispersal and there are plenty of non-thinkers in the cattle business to check if there are brain waves. The American cattle industry is a place where any oddity is welcomed: human or beast. It is a shame.

My thx to Bruce Hooper and family, TN, for the return of the nice heifer calves from the cows I sold him; win-win when your stock goes to good, practical management...but I have an ulterior reason for posting; applying a little pressure for Bruce and Allison to come to Missouri and meet the regulars breeding cattle in a tru-line framework...Bruce is 24 yrs old; not all youth is wasted on the young cheers

Thanks for the kind words Mike and for taking the time to deal with our small numbers. It's easy to have good management when you buy cows that are bred to work in your environment without much help. We may be able to make it to Missouri if we can make our work schedules fit.

the sires of this bull and others pictured like him brought 4 to 5000 regularly in KY today; weighing 1200 to 1500 @ yearling...

the ad for the bull above read...
Purebred angus Bulls, delivery available, Vaccinated and worm, 800-900 lbs, 12 months old, out of registered low birth weight Bulls, eating good hay(no grain) $1900 obo

what a nice return to corn for the first seller; what a poor genetic and economic return to the second...maybe genomic testing will prevent this in the future...

there`s ready nothing I can say , so I just took a picture of a three yr old on stockpile turning green...

then I snagged a 4 yr old Fenley dau; first to calve in that pasture last night...

probably too much milk, but a body to support it...I noticed her son in the bull lot looks pretty ordinary; about right...

I don`t always make a $100,000 in a day,
but when I do,
I share it with you

I selected 12 yearling bulls today to combine with 4 used two`s from last year`s yearlings to breed 250 cows and heifers this spring/summer...
we have about 30 bulls yet for sale; $2400...
the performance data is in the program; the pedigree is in the name, and guarantees beyond breeding soundness is in the price...
One purpose, problem free cows; one price because we don`t know which bull will sire the highest percentage of good daughters...but more importantly,
we know all will sire useful daughters...
if you want terminal traits and feeder calf bulls, we are not afraid or ashamed to tell you to buy elsewhere; we find terminal bulls cheaper to buy than to raise...

the above has certainly not gone viral in the facebook world Smile

Read the latest farao mailbox fodder last night. They test for more witchdoctor type traits than any sane producer is willing to test for (and tell) but they also are almost modern scientist to analyze or maybe anal-ize data. Comparative is no longer the profitable cattlemen with moderate and highly desirable cattle but the generic AI catalog bulls. So the strawman is in glossy print and picture rather than in realism.

Two analysis based on assumptions: 1- high $EN is best and 2- smallest BW and highest CED is best.

Seems like two assumptions that are self-fulfilling prophesies if your #1 goal is to sell folks small bulls that will not fit the demands of the market for more money. I know of no where that any research can prove that two extremes make the best cattle. Why is this not seen for what it is? These two parameters do not define maternal cattle, terminal cattle, useful cattle but, most important to the customer, PROFITABLE cattle.

It all boils down to who is telling the truth and selling products for the good of the buyer. A $2400 bull with a background of a useful herd sounds like the high road to me.

Nice cows Mike - thanks for posting - btw - success is not to be judged on how many likes, shares or comments on fb - be like me and just comfort yourself with the knowledge that not everybody sees everything and even if they do not everyone is clever enough to recognise nuggets in amongst all the rocks - post something about the Don and I am sure your wall would light up like a fire cracker - good solid cows with depth and girth, fertility and just all around niceness are sadly just not sexy enough ...................... lucky really otherwise everyone would be doing it instead of chasing the next best thing to hell in a hand cart ........ seems like Mr Trump would make a magnificent mainstream bull salesman .........................

Between Brent and I calving heifers, the early experimental ce bull selection program results are very promising; two of the experimental bulls are sold and gone; one possibly retrievable; no big deal; same program , live and unassisted from a 2 yr old, the growth un-important, making a replacement female , a given...

That's my kind of purebred - sold a purebred cull cow today for over $1200 that I bought 9 years ago for $900. She gave me 9 good calves. Would have been 14 next month. Had mastitis problems last summer or she'd still be here. I live in a different world from the multi-thousand $ flush cows - so do my commercial customers.

Mike,
My hearing is not great but I looked at your FB stuff this AM and saw and tried to hear a bit about the Felix video. If Felix is a fluke from a big cow bred to a small bull what made Encore a better bull? Mere random genetics or the sire?

He was not a fluke...he was intermediate of diverse parents, exactly what you would expect...Encores sire was once a top growth bull

we just can get over these names in a pedigree; as if we know which half got transmitted; or as if we can figure the half out after the fact...after we figure it out, the one thing certain is each of us will turn out imperfect bulls....every damn one of them...
new version of Wright... it`s all so exceedingly simple for me; the difficulty lies in picking out a bull for you...
