Seems All good things gotta come to bad ends,
And it's the same with all my pleasurable cattle sins,.
One day this feller from Frankfort came to see,
and said you have nary a sign of a premise ID.
He waved a magic wand, and with a fair bit of lip,
Said your damn cows have got no microchips;

So next it was a kid from the NCBA on the phone,
Said I was likely endangering a disease free zone,
APHIS was very quick to quash all my comments about JBS,
They were here to mind MY business and check MY test,
So when I said, why they`re purebred Angus, of course
The AAA said he`s got no papers, never paid a dime to Angus Source.

Right in the middle of all this despair, a customer came driving by,
Said he needed a bull, everyone`s prices had made him cry,
So I showed him a good one and priced him pretty dang cheap,
Then he wanted to look at the papers to see what he`d reap.
Why there they stand, all over the field, I said with prideful glee
But the look on his face was sadder than a guilty plea.

The KBCA and the KDA, they tell me what I should buy,
And if I do as they say, while ignoring what they do and the reasons why,
they`ll send me a check, and if we work it right, I’ll spend nary a dime,
it`s the government you know, stealing from them, is never a crime.
Gosh, I wish I could help but it`s cows, not papers, I believe you most need ,
but he headed out, and here I still sit, on my private sack of seeds
Y'all come back now, ya hear…

Bull = steer
Cow = bull
Other than that, I really like them! No Like the modern public bathroom unhinged. Change the names on all three: us, them, undecided.

last spring thought he was timid as he never went near nine other bulls.....come to find out it was the nine others staying away from him.

fun and profitable watching cattle be cattle..... then it is to weigh, report, shuffle papers making the best better.

There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell" Very Happy

I think I got the wrong cow in the post, but when the herd is consistent, individuals are insignificant. the type is the same...

quoted from Bob Hough June synopsis of the 2016 BIF Meeting
"Although slaughter weights are increasing, Dr. David Lalman of Oklahoma State University pointed out that feeder calf weights have not increased for many years as is demonstrated in four large commercial databases from different regions of the country. This is despite the genetic trends in the purebred industry linearly increasing for weaning weights. It is clear that environmental constraints will only allow so much weaning weight to be expressed in the commercial sector, and continued selection for increased weaning weight seems unwarranted."
sooooooooo...with increasing ww epds based on pedigree and field data, registered herds are obviously providing the superior environment that support "purebred industry linearly increasing for weaning weights" ...following that environment assumption, my next point would be that the derived maternal epd`s from registered herds are unlikely to be as applicable to a commercial environment as we may be lead to believe...

Rod`s data posted on Facebook...

Rod`s yearling heifers wintered on WY stockpile, some hay, and protein tubs before summer grazing, leaving them considerably lighter at breeding time than typical heifer development schemes, ultrasound preg checked 90% bred in a 30 day breeding season this week...those are the measurements that cause us to be resistant to change ; most genetic change has been accompanied with changes in feed consumption, change is not always progress...

And I am guessing some of your management groups with pasture improvements made have increased weaning weights with roughly same pedestrian level epd levels you have had for years.

Most of this year's weaned bulls sired by KA ennie, meenie minie, mo...looks like 1500/ hd will be the asking price. While many might need what we have, very few want it, they are not game material, just closed herd seedstock that have survived functional criteria on the basic forage we grow. Nothing poor, and nothing exceptionally better , by design , but good enough to know we have no need of anyone else's Angus maternal stock..not that they might not be good, just no time for discovery . If you need a miracle, sorry, the address is Nancy,Ky not 34th street. ..the best judgement on the bulls and program could be made by seeing the cowherd, not one, but all of them ...a picture of one might show the ideal model, but never the distribution of the herd ...

Mike,
If you was a 30 year old would you be smart enough to keep doing as you are or does it take years of travels, failures and successes to see the beauty and simplicity of what you are accomplishing?

It would take economic freedom, intelligence, and courage...I had none of the three at 30...in hindsight, Larry wished he had never sold a registered animal after he conceptualized tru-line; so I don`t fret about what might have been, just as I don`t fret too much about what is not going to be...
I hope you can video a fair number of clips of cattle , people, and talks at next years gathering...will be quite a job; we`ll discuss more the possibilities and requirements when you pick up bulls...

All the two year olds (5) we used last year are headed to AR fescue and Bermuda pastures...no , they have not been DNA
tested for fescue tolerance; god forbid they have any common ancestry with the animals used to calibrate said test...we don't
need numbers or names on paper to create rarity to advertise as GREAT, the goal is to make GOOD cows, commonplace in the pasture. ..

Is this the goal of the 5? Or is an economic base needed to start for economic freedom?

Eddie, I think they are Bonsma type, and all the dams of the bulls look the part without having too much dairy look...preg checked the last set of cows today; 13% open; half or more of those calved later this year; should have been culled last year; not disappointed in the least; especially with the breeding season beginning June 5 now; less fescue at home, 2 opens in 43 cows... ...pretty obvious here that a good cow is going to get spring bred in 45 days, or will likely be open...will continue to turn open twos into fall calvers, economics, nothing more...

pedigree in the name, no genomic testing, no epds, no bureaucratic sponsor, no show halters,  no great claims, prepotent and plentiful, money in the bank made commercially,
yelp, a foreign language from a castaway alive in another galaxy ...

I`ve got 100 females for sale, and based on the below, you better buy them now...

Dear Fellow Angus Breeders,
The elections are over whether or not you voted for Donald Trump is now history. We must get behind him and move forward. If he does what he said he would do in closing the borders to imports, such as red meat, protein if you wish, and stopping product coming in from Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Argentina, get ready for the wildest cattle demand that you have ever seen. If he does this we all better start building our cattle inventory. We can only pray that he will follow through on these promises. Congratulations to the President-Elect on his victory!
Cheers,
Tom Burke

having to pray after voting for my choice seems a bit paradoxical to me...

We too are hoping that 45% tariffs are put on goods imported from China and elsewhere under Trump's watch - we have FTA with both China and India (both becoming increasingly big beef eaters) - really looking forward to the US borders being closed - what we can't then send to you guys I am sure we can quadruple in sales to countries locked out of trade with the (Dis) United States of Trumpland.
