I agree Mike the weather in this area for the start of winter has made raising cattle very easy. More rain in August may have eliminated about all hay feeding this year.
As for the preg success in Montana, that is pretty good. If everyone had that success it might hurt the open cow cull market at the yards. Very Happy

Perhaps simply the result of cattle bred to be cattle, to be fertile and productive - not the highest this, best that or exceptional anything else. Too much attention in most other quarters to things that may sound fabulous but do not contribute to getting cows in calf which is the absolute bottom line - a live calf which grows well and puts meat where it is meant to, and while mum doing the job of rearing it she gets back in calf to do it all again next year - why does something so seemingly simple get so muddied?

PS summer finally arrived with a thump here ......................... we loving it - Christmas wishes and happy thoughts for all for the year ahead - cheers

Heavy cloud today and three paddocks down for silage - hmmmmmm ................ meant to be baled and wrapped tomorrow (Christmas Eve) - where art thou sunshine??????

Despite having a multitude of pine trees and the chainsaw laying waste to the same as I type (splitting firewood in the middle of summer as you do) we have a "pretend tree" - simply because I love having the tree up and the false ones last the distance. Wishing all on the Corner and elsewhere the very best for their Christmas festivities and even more best wishes for a fabulous 2015 - long may the price of beef per kilo stay up there - beef farmers deserve a couple of good years in a row cheers cheers

Megan,
holidays don`t mean much to me anymore...because everyday is lived like a holiday Smile cheers it`s 52 degrees this morning; and the rain will hold off until noon {have a heck of a problem with your life in clock time being 18 hours ahead of mine; but if a big tree fell in the forest, would not we hear it at the same "time"?  Smile }...I could golf; because the cows got a fresh 50 ft of grass yesterday...but I golfed yesterday; and the day before; and the day before...and I think my cows are improving faster than my game; actually , my game is more like the traditional establishment; one step up; and two steps back; creating a future problem while curing the current...I gotta get more consistent; improve my average by eliminating the highs...hhhmmmm, but you gotta kept the low outlier so you can brag to your friends while ignoring the bad...gosh, golf is the establishment breeding program Smile

there`s a real selling problem with these fertility issues...customer BrentW called; needs 12 fall bred heifers instead of the usual 15 April 1...5 opens in 180 cows...180 calves this fall on 180 cows includes grafted twins...BrentW is a part-time farmer... cheers

I`ve have some "just what the market and pointy heads want"... crossed ,
bigger ,
thicker ,
squarer hipped ,
heifers with first calves {what embryo`s didn`t take} come early summer...
...while no one here will line up for them, the majority will...it`s nice to cull into the upper echelon of the commercial marketplace... Cool Cool

The hardest part for me has been to determine an ideal, how much cow and what characteristics do I prefer, where will it stabilize, environmental considerations and the list goes on.  Think how hard it would be for several breeders to determine a common ideal, and then to figure out how to replicate if more often over time.

I noticed this pic in an advertisement...looks like a Murphy model painting...is this the new Angus ideal? or as I see her, the best hoped for by-product of terminal selection?

she sure as hell does`t fit my ideal of a Tru-X female...

of course I believe in complimentary breeds instead of the establishment`s traditional bureaucracy saving,   breed competition...

I still have one buy a bull; get a close bred bull free for the using deal left from close { heads up Megan  Smile } pedigreed inbreeding   {but not registered} little experimental side projects... some have participated in this in the past; with I suppose OK results; at least they still speak and send me Christmas cards with family pictures; which I enjoy  santa Thanks  cheers ...Hobson is in this year; what a joy to work with a guy whose attitude is "it`s all good "...

the primary herd here continues to be selected from within for functional type and vigor  ;  letting the level of inbreeding, like water, find it`s own  level ; ATSL  of Larry`s continued evolution of closed herd breeding methodology seeking greater consistency and simplicity...what a joy is it to see it work; selling the non-traditional, non- establishment produced bull is a pain in the ass...but why would you want to be part of a game that anyone can play  Question  Question  Question  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

the last such project offered

now resides in Arkansas and the reports are good...bulls can be delivered to FLORIDA {where the forecast is 84degrees for Sat`s t-time Smile } and anywhere along the route in February Exclamation
and I was reminded that Larkota Transportation of Kimball, SD is available to haul tru-line stock anywhere in the lower 48...maybe farther  Smile Smile

ps..JN, notice the spine through the rump area...

We got a few Nubbin daughters coming into production this spring. We got a few Nubbin son's in the barn. My uncle is currently using the bull...loves him, has no idea of his background or fame Laughing . My feeder calves have never graded better than they have the last 2yrs. I guess the 1st cross is the best cross. If Truline were ever applied properly on a large scale the commercial guy would get 1st crosses every time. Merry Christmas MK!

more common sense from BT...in fact, the most I read that suits me, time after time... I certainly don`t apply them all, because convenience does trump profit...glad to see him acknowledge that...

• Strive for a trouble-free, problem-free cow herd with good reproduction and accomplish this on your range or pasture with minimal added inputs.

Getting closer, but perfection is never achieved.
Contentment is being satisfied with what you have.

A stumpknocker in SC is a green sunfish. They will be at the base of cypress trees so you have to fish right against the tree in between the roots to catch them. I assume that they are the same slang term in FL. Otherwise, you're on your own!

Thanks Eddie...I had assumed it was kinda a last dance/chance place for us oldtimers to make some noise; and do they ever...but given that the seafood is a specialty, I`m thinking you`re nearer correct...Linda and I hope to make the Valentine Day Dance here; I think it will be the ultimate in slow dancing... I just hauled two KA bulls down to my bull pasture. While unloading them one missed the gate into the pasture and started down the road. A neighbor was coming by and turned the bull back and we put him in the pasture. He really liked the bulls and wanted to know more about them. When he left he had Mike's phone number with him.
